How will ScarWork massage affect a scar?

ScarWork is used to improve feeling and functionality in the scar and surrounding tissues, creating better movement between the layers of the skin, fascia (connective tissue) and muscle. Treatments are given with dry hands, (without oils or creams). Like any massage these movements stimulate the circulation, lymphatic flow and nervous system in the scar area to encourage renewed healing and promote tissue health even decades after the scar was formed.

Visually, cosmetic changes can occur: scars often appear smaller, flatter, lighter and less prominent but the emphasis is on the underlying tissue changes. As the dense scar tissue reduces and the tissue health recovers, nerve impairment such as numbness, pain, itching, irritation or extreme sensitivity often improves.

Changes that occur to the scar and nerve function are usually permanent. Tightness in surrounding tissues is reduced helping restore normal muscle function. Knots and tight ropey scars are softened and loosened, ridges and holes can be minimised. Multiple treatments may be needed to gain the most benefit and response to treatment will vary for each individual.

What happens when a scar forms?

Scar formation is a natural process of wound healing. Scar tissue contains more fibrous tissue and collagen deposits than normal skin making it structurally and functionally different. Sometimes nerve damage from the injury or surgery causes numbness, sensitivity, burning or itching.

Why ScarWork?

ScarWork technique has been growing in popularity in UK since 2015 and is now offered by many cancer centres to support recovery after surgery and radiotherapy. It was developed over 45 years by American therapist Sharon Wheeler.

Martin studied Sharon Wheeler’s ScarWork under Emma Holly and finds it effective when used alone, but also as a prelude to a relaxing remedial massage. Having had subtle release of the scar, new flexibility can percolate through the entire body.

Most scars benefit from a short course of 3-6 treatments to get the best results.

Will it hurt?

ScarWork is not like traditional scar massage, it is rarely painful, even for new scars and is gentle enough to use on children and infants. The specially developed movement work on and around the scar, they stimulate change and treatments can create global body change as patterns of dysfunction in muscles and joints caused by old or new injuries are released.

Which scars can be treated?

All kinds of scars from accidents, burns, operations and cosmetic surgery. Newly healed scars should be at least 8 weeks post-op and you should have had a post-operative check-up with your consultant/doctor before treatment. Scars that are very old also can change and improve so if your scar is newly healed or decades old you can still benefit from ScarWork.

Fully Qualified Masseur

Martin Kingston McCloghry

Martin has always enjoyed classic Swedish Massage therapy for relaxation and wellbeing. He is enthusiastic about discovering new ways to massage for relaxation, and offers a variety of approaches to make sure you get the session that is just right for you at this time.

He discovered the benefits of Sports Massage, which many athletes and non-athletes alike use to cope with soft-tissue injuries, whether stress-related or not. Whether he incorporates Deep Tissue Massage and other robust interventions is entirely at your discretion, though as a Soft Tissue Therapist he recommends caution with their use. He thinks massage does not need to be painful to be effective!

Martin uses his anglo name for business, rather than the gaelic name – on the principle that if his patients can’t spell his name they won’t remember it! His surname, McCloghry is derived from “Clough Righ” Stone of Kings or King Stone (the keystone of an arch), so Martin Kingston is the trade name.

Martin Kingston
I have found Martin to be helpful, knowledgeable and extremely capable. I regard him as my trusted body mechanic and he has helped me to stay fit and able despite the demands of my work and sport.
The treatment I receive from Martin is second to none and I trust him implicitly. He has proven to me that he is able to assist me in all cases and I recommend him wholeheartedly.
I have played badminton this afternoon and felt a lot more comfortable after a couple of weeks of feeling very creaky before your massage.
The relief from my backache was almost instant, which carried on to the next morning. The first time in three years I have had a decent night’s sleep and got up without a back or neck ache.
I’m still glowing from my wonderful massage… While you were working I could feel not only the localised areas, but also my entire body sighing with relief and gratitude. You ARE the Masseurs’ Masseur!
I was extremely impressed with Martin’s approach. He was knowledgeable and thorough. I felt very comfortable and confident throughout the treatment and am looking forward to making regular sessions part of my wellbeing strategy.
Martin has always taken an interest in my requirements and displays a depth and breadth of knowledge and experience about chronic and acute conditions.
